Fashion Friday Fun Post: Oscars 2015

ACTUAL FASHION

Bee Shaffer in Dolce & Gabbana is actually my best dressed of the night. I LOVE this floral gown and her styling, and I especially love that Anna Wintour’s face seems to have frozen in that expression. Marion Cotillard in Dior gets “best white of the night”, while Lady Gaga in Azzedine Alaïa is both appropriately weird and occasion-appropriate. Lupita Nyong’o’s purloined Calvin Klein pearl dress is worth discussing, at least, and Meryl Streep in Lanvin and Tegan & Sara all had great menswear-inspired looks.

Fashion Friday Fun Post: Golden Globes 2015

I haven’t done one of these in forever!

Best Dressed

It was a boring night for fashion so it’s not like anything here was a jaw-dropping fashion moment, but these are the people who managed the best individual style for the night.

Lorde is my favorite in a Narciso Rodriguez tux with a crop top. I like that she’s learning to find eveningwear to fit her style, and not changing her style to fit into eveningwear. Also, I love that the tux isn’t body-con. Tina Fey wore a pretty great tux, too, but I’m giving Lorde the points for going with the wide leg and menswear jacket. Julianne Moore in Givenchy had the best silver/grey of the night, Laura Carmichael managed the best “not a nominee but still happy to be here” look in James Galanos, and Allison Tolman proved it’s possible to look beautiful and stylish when you’re not a size two in a Gauri and Nainika gown. Melissa McCarthy should take notes. Jessica Chastain had a personal best with a plunging Versace gown that was also the best boobs-out display of the night, and finally, Ruth Wilson’s “inside out” Prada was the closest thing to a gasp-worthy dress for the night.

Fashion Friday Fun Post: MET GALA MADNESS

The Met Gala happened on Monday. It’s the Super Bowl of Fashion. The theme was “White Tie and Decorations” and the gala was honoring Charles James. We have a lot to talk about. Let’s do this.

Best Dressed

The thing about the Met Gala is that it’s about excess. It is not about pleasing the majority or playing it safe. It’s about risk and taking chances and homage. My general rule of thumb is that if the masses hate your dress, you’ve probably done something right. Similarly, if People thinks you look great, you’re probably boring as fuck. (I’m looking at you, Blake Lively.) With that in mind, here is my best dressed list: Continue reading “Fashion Friday Fun Post: MET GALA MADNESS”

Fashion Friday Fun Post: Charles James

I did several of these, then didn’t do any for several weeks because I am both lazy and terrible, but Monday is the Met Gala (aka the Super Bowl of Fashion), which means we all need a warm up to get ready for the sartorial onslaught next week. This year’s Gala is dedicated to Charles James, the twentieth century designer referred to as “America’s first couturier”. Of the important twentieth century designers, James is a top-fiver, alongside Dior, Chanel, Balenciaga and Versace. I would actually put him in the top three (with Dior for the New Look and Chanel for the little black dress) as James’s influence still reigns supreme throughout fashion. Zac Posen, for instance, is directly influenced by James, and a lot of people ascribe Dior’s New Look (arguably the most iconic and revolutionary fashion moment in the twentieth century) to James’s influence. So let’s ooh and ahh at James’s beautiful collection of museum-worthy gowns. Continue reading “Fashion Friday Fun Post: Charles James”

Fashion Friday Fun Post: The Women of Mad Men

The Mad Men season 7 premiere was in LA and the various ladies in Don Draper’s life came out to play. They didn’t all win, but they all played. Let’s do this alphabetically, starting with Alison Brie in Marchesa. Surprise—a Marchesa I don’t hate. It reminds me of Oscar de la Renta’s embroidered dresses this spring (though they’re a lot better than this Marchesa number), and while I wish Brie had styled it a little more, it fits nicely and she looks nice, so it’s nice. Fashion Friday Fun Post: Emma Watson is CRUSHING it

Over the course of the week, while pimping Noah, Emma Watson dressed for everything from daytime events to formal premieres and she knocked every look out of the park. It was a crazy run from someone who already has a high bar for fashion—she basically completed a sartorial Iron Man. Let’s break it down. Fashion Friday Fun Post: The Winter Soldier premiere, Europe edition

We’re back for another one of these thingies! With, hopefully, better organized/easier to view photos. Over the week the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit up premieres in Paris and London, and we have a lot to talk about.

Ladies

Hayley Atwell showed up to the London premiere, wearing grey, bedazzled Julien McDonald and even though I am pretty much over the cut-out trend, this dress works. Partly it’s because Atwell has the body for tit cut-outs, but it’s also just a very flattering dress that is not over-styled. Solid hair and makeup, love the pop of red from the shoes, but this is a lot of dress and Atwell lets it speak for itself (and all it says is TITS).
