Summer Movie Preview: July 2018

July 6

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Marvel’s latest is a direct antidote to the sturm und drang of Infinity War and it succeeds within in its own modest parameters. Also, like Spider-Man: Homecoming, this is pretty much just a comedy with some superhero stuff in it.

The First Purge

The Purge franchise falls back-asswards into relevance.

Sorry to Bother You

Hip-hop artist Boots Riley makes his directorial debut with this wild, inventive scorched-earth satire about everything from race relations to consumerism coopting the language of resistance to our increasingly bleak future as workers in a capitalist dystopia. Hilarious, FUCKIN WEIRD, and impossible to describe, this is the can’t-miss movie of the summer.

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot

A biopic of controversy-plagued cartoonist John Callahan, whose illustrations were scathing on a nice day.

Eighth Grade

Comedian Bo Burnham makes his feature film directorial debut with this sensitive, earnest portrait of teenage awkwardness and social dysfunction. It’s actually annoying how talented Burnham is.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

*fart noise*

Sadly, The Rock never actually punches the building.

Sorry to Bother You

July 20

Like Sorry to Bother You, this drew comparisons to Get Out at Sundance, and also like Sorry to Bother You, it’s not really like Get Out except in broad thematic strokes.

The Equalizer 2

Every actor over 50 gets their own revenge-driven action franchise. Although I will take The Equalizer over Taken any day of the week.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

At least it’s not Hotel Transylvania 3.

Unfriended: Dark Web

Can’t wait for Unfriended 3: Intellectual Dark Web.

July 27

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

I especially enjoy the bit Henry Cavill cocks his fists like they’re shotguns.
